Iteration 1 is a two level system that addresses the issues of space, appearance, and interest in the Middle School. By taking advantage of vertical space, the RISE uses less space than having a separate waste and recycling bin side by side along the floor. The RISE also helps make the waste bins more visually appealing by enclosing them into one structure and hiding the waste. While not pictured in the the model, the top bin says “Recycling” and the bottom says “Landfill”. By having recycling on the top and naming the regular waste “Landfill”, users are forced to be more conscience of how they are disposing of their waste. With the recycling being the more accessible of the two, this will in turn make recycling be the better choice.

The pull out doors help make the system easy to use, while still encouraging more thought about how users are disposing of waste.

We have three materials, pictured above, in mind for the next stages of the prototype. We took cost, strength, and sustainability into mind when thinking about materials we could use. The first model represents an acrylic plastic material, the second wood, and the third a cardboard material.
